Top on our list of great things to do this winter in the Finger Lakes is visiting the region’s wineries. The Finger Lakes Wine Region is considered to be one of the best in the nation. Winter in Wine Country is one of the most exciting times to enjoy some of the award winning wines from the region. Some tasting rooms are only open seasonally and those that do have wine tasting available often have a different schedule for the slower, winter months. We advise to call ahead to any wineries you plan on visiting before your visit to ensure they are open during that time/day.
Ski, Snow, Hike, Ice Fishing and more
Winter is easily one of the most underrated seasons to visit the region. There are plenty of outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy. Take advantage of the lake effect snow, and get in some of the best downhill skiing this winter. Enjoy the Wonderful Life Celebration in Seneca Falls, which was said to be the inspiration for the classic film.
Bristol Mountain is the only ski and snowboarding resort in the Finger Lakes with a 1,200-foot vertical rise. Greek Peak Mountain Resort is another major ski destination in the area. The Seneca Art & Culture Center at Ganondagan State Historic Site immerses you into the world of Native American art and culture, old and new.
The Finger Lakes region boasts more than 500 miles of hiking trails. Try primitive backcountry camping in Italy Hill State Forest in Branchport off of Keuka Lake. This style of camping offers no amenities and are for the serious outdoor enthusiasts. Anyone participating in primitive camping in the area must follow guidelines from New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation.
Snowshoeing on the trails at Tanglewood Nature Center and Museum in Elmira is a fun adventurous activity. The Keuka Outlet Trail offers seven miles of cross-country skiing. Downhill skiers will enjoy Bristol Mountain’s 1,200 feet of vertical, two high speed quads, and state-of-the-art snowmaking.
Cumming Nature Center boasts 15 miles of gorgeous forested trails just for cross-country skiers and snow shoeers. Indoor skating lets you get that winter feel without having to brave the elements and, the ice is always smooth. Ice fishing is big in the Finger Lakes, especially on Canandaigua, Canadice, and Honeoye lakes.
Ice fishing is a favorite activity in the Finger Lakes during the colder months. Free Fishing Weekend is an excellent opportunity to cast your line without too much paperwork. The Finger Lakes offer many opportunities to catch perch, walleye, trout, or a variety of other fish species. Check the Department of Environmental Conservation website for rules and regulations within each county. If you’re new to the sport, make sure to tag along with someone else as it takes special equipment.

The Best Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast offers 2-night and 3-night specials. The Inn is popular for snowshoeing, hiking and cross-country skiing as well. The on-site spa is a great way to relax and rejuvenate during the winter. Greek Peak Mountain Resort is at a mere 45 minutes away. Bristol Mountain ski resort is also very popular.
